Get involved

We support initiatives that restore degraded lands, protect ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity. MSA works with local partners such as Golden Star Resources, which came through to help convert a former refuse site into a community recreational parkland. MSA aims to promote tree planting, sustainable farming, and responsible land use. By restoring nature, we help secure cleaner air, fertile soils, and a healthier environment for generations to come.

A SPACE FOR HEALTH + RECREATION

The vision went beyond simply cleaning the site. The rehabilitated land was planned as a recreational centre where people could exercise, relax and socialize. The proposed facility includes a gym and fitness centre, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, a children's playground, cafeteria, parking and public Wi-Fi. The approximately 12,000-square-metre facility was designed to create opportunities for recreation, health and community interaction

ENVIRONMENT + LIVELIHOODS

Environmental rehabilitation can also create economic opportunities. The project was designed to support employment and skills development within the community. The planned cafeteria was also intended to create opportunities particularly for local women while providing a potential market for farmers and locally produced food. By restoring the land and introducing grassing, tree planting and ecological maintenance measures, the project also sought to reverse environmental degradation and improve the site's ecological function.

TRANSFORMATION

Reclaiming Land, Restoring Hope The transformation began with clearing the accumulated waste and preparing the degraded land for a completely different future. What had been dominated by waste, stagnant water and degraded ground was progressively cleared, levelled and prepared for rehabilitation. The project demonstrates how environmental restoration can create opportunities for healthier and more productive community spaces.

THE CHALLENGE

From Environmental Hazard to Opportunity Before the project began, the site was an illegal dumping area and a major nuisance to the surrounding community. Previous mining activities had also left deep pits that collected water, creating environmental and safety concerns. MSA partnered with its development partners to address the problem at its source: reclaim the degraded land, improve sanitation and give the site a new purpose.

YOUTH ACTION

The transformation was powered by people as much as equipment. MSA mobilized youthful volunteers and contributed directly to development works, including final land preparation, grassing and tree planting. Community-based groups and local institutions also contributed through participation and action.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR LASTING CHANGE

Golden Star Bogoso Prestea Limited (GSBPL) served as the principal financier and provided technical support. Maintenance and Sustainability Africa (MSA) contributed development work, environmental expertise, volunteer mobilization, fundraising support and guidance on sustainable waste management. The Prestea Urban Council and community-based groups also participated in the initiative. For MSA, the project represents more than the rehabilitation of one site. It reflects a commitment to ensuring that development is maintained, sustainable and beneficial to communities over the long term.
